Pop Reggaeton : Initial Research

Initially I decided to choose a genre similar to Latin American music so I chose Pop Reggaeton. This is mainly because of it's stronger link to dance culture.

Obscure and Interesting Facts about Pop Reggaeton

  • Reggaeton generically comes from urban, predominantly black, working-class communities whether they’re from Kingston or Panama City or New York or San Juan.that the island’s trinity of races black, Spanish, and indigenous and has produced a harmonious society with no racism.
  • Reggaeton music can be used to articulate connections between Puerto Ricans and other Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Latino populations, this history often gets obscured through the emphasis on “Despacito” made popular today by Justin Bieber as a crossover Latino phenomenon.
  • Reggaeton gives Latino youth a way to participate in contemporary urban-American culture without abandoning important aspects of their heritage.
  • Reggaeton’s unmistakable boom-ch-boom-chick relates directly to the late 80s early 90s dancehall reggae that inspired it
  • The genre that contributed many stylistic features to calypso and other popular music of the 20th-century Caribbean tourist industry.
  • As an utterly electronic style – usually produced on computers, drum machines, and keyboards – reggaeton embraces new possibilities for a high-tech, post-hip-hop, Latin Caribbean aesthetic.
  • Reggaeton also represents a break from previous Latin music in that it appears to have fostered a greater dialogue with non-Latin forms such as hip-hop and reggae rather than the popular Spanish-language genres it has supplanted.
