SB1 : Penguin Children's Award Submission

Submission:
Create a pdf with the cover and full spread cover design on separate pages

Evaluation

The final outcome meets the requirements of the brief and has strong use of typography through the use of colour, scale, placement and contrasting typefaces work well to visualise the story, audience and characters of the book. The use of negative space and colour scheme selected uses neutral colours aiming to appeal to a wider audience. The illustration aims to strongly relate to the main character and the illustrative style encouraging a younger audience.

The script typeface works well with a paired typeface to ensure legibility of important elements of the cover i.e. the blurb. The script typeface on a smaller scale becomes less legible but the type on path tool creates an interesting composition and creates a sense of depth to the shape.

Overall the design works well to meet the brief whilst the design created has an interesting typographic composition making the cover stand out against competing books and more traditional layouts, it does also relate well emotively visually aiming to represent the feeling of 'wonder'. The illustrative style is also fitting visually of the main character and storyline of the book. The illustration has no fine details in order to show the feeling of emptiness the main character Auggie feels for being different. This design works well to focus on visualising the feelings of both wonder and of the main character Auggie through typography and illustration.
