Collaborative SB2 : Logo & Business Card : Design Development

Initially the starting point was generating unique ideas for the logo both with existing typefaces and creating unique letterforms in illustrator creating variants from different brushes. The typefaces gave a cleaner certainly professional aesthetic to the logo although the brush tool created a far more interesting shape and texture which made the logo design even more unique to the client.

Due to the client adamant on a black background the colour choice of the logo had to be high contrast to remain legible. Although the monochrome colour scheme is only a starting point it can be altered to the clients preference if she decides she’d like this to be changed. The high contrast colour scheme is most legible and works well as a starting point to showcase a range of formats or layout to the client.

After creating these initial ideas  the client was contacted feedback was requested to ensure the design was heading in the right direction or the way the client envisioned. Feedback received established which design or designs to refine further throughout the design development process. The feedback was as follows, “They are beautiful” “The middle one I love, I also love that last one” This enabled the design to be further refined based on client feedback. The client also suggested a few alterations for further development such as the inclusion of symbols instead of the full word for email, phone and instagram. These modifications can be incorporated into design development.

After the second meeting we collaboratively discussed developments and possible print finishes. The client identified the design she liked the most and we developed it further by discussing finishing methods and tweaking the design slightly to include symbols instead of full words for phone email and Instagram.

During the meeting collaboratively selected some of the clients best photography to appear on the reverse side of the business card. The variations need to be printed now to show experimentation of different stocks and finishes such as just printed or foiled. The next meeting will take place once these mock ups are printed before the full batch of 50 business cards can be printed.

After discussing print finishes the design will most likely be printed in an off black with the initials in solid black for silver foiling to be applied. This will create a higher quality finish with more of a ‘professional’ aesthetic which the client specifically requested. The stock will need to be a matt smooth finish in order for this finishing method to work most effectively. If the client had wanted a solid black background finding an appropriate coloured stock would of been necessary.

However to give the client more variation I will show her an off black, and solid black digital print finish in contrast to a foil finished mock up for the client to choose the most successful before the batch printing and or finishing method takes place. It was important to ensure the client was happy with the outcome before mass or batch production took place.
