Shade Tone & Tint

Shade tone and tint are terms we often refer to when describing colour. It is important to know the difference between each term as it can be helpful for colour mixing and helpful in deciding the most suitable colour for design.

Hue : A colour, to be specific a colour on the colour wheel.

Tints : Made when you add white to any hue on the colour wheel, lightening and desaturating a hue also lessening the intensity.

Tones : Made when you add black and white to a hue or grey. This means a colour will appear less saturated but can appear either lighter or darker than the original hue.

Shades : Created when only black is added to a hue often resultant in darker intense colour.
