3 VISUAL TYPOGRAPHIC IDEAS

During this brief our idea developed more from Ai Wei Wei’s range of work, and Chinese background. A lot of our inspiration came from Ai Wei Wei’s “Hand of a Dynasty Vase.“ We developed the found alphabet to add more context and visual meaning. We even experimented using old Chinese scrolls and Chinese lettering overlaying the alphabet. This was created from our own fragments to interpret our own “Dynasty vase.”
The context of our ideas also came from the original history of the Zodiac heads. When the Palace was ransacked some of the heads were never returned. Their location is still unknown. Ideas came from the fact some of the missing heads where replaced by recreations of the original heads.

We wanted to bring this contrast of modern and traditional, or old and new into our ideas. Therefore, we focused on Zodiac history and the Chinese background of the artist.
The mark making we created represents our version of Chinese Calligraphy.

We created another idea which focused on more visual aspects, such as photography and including our own found alphabet. This worked well to connect our ideas to the artist, Ai Wei Wei. This allowed us to create visual context in a different way. We also made the surrounding layer of text more fragmented to identify our idea more clearly with the cracked dynasty vase.
