Punctuation Ligatures Emojis & Glyphs
What is a Ligature?
Two or more letters joined together by a glyph.
The Ampersand ( & )
Ampersand is used instead of writing the word and you can use the symbol "&." It is an old connecting letter or ligature. The ampersand was first discovered as a piece of grafitti on a wall in Pompei after the eruption of Vesuvius. This was the start of the ampersand as a evolution of the typographic form.
The "@" sign
The origin of the @ symbol is still unknown. However there are some claims date back to the 1300s appearing in religious manuscripts, by Medieval Bulgarian Monks translating Greek texts. Although in 1971 Ray Tomlinson gave the @ sign its most prominent and familiar usage also becoming more recognisable at this stage. He soon determined a way of linking a user and company to a host without being too ambiguous for computer systems.
