Further Research
I researched Joseph Muller-Brockmann a well-known Swiss designer to gain a broader understanding of typography. Through research I discovered his main influence to be design and art movements such as Constructivism and Bauhaus. An example of his most decisive work he did was for Zurich Town Hall as advertisement posters for theatre productions. All though his work had a huge range also including his own books based on his work practice and philosophy. He aimed his book to provide a foundation for other young aspiring designers.
What is the Constructivism Art Movement?
Constructivism is an artistic philosophy originating in Russia by Vladimir Tatlin. It can also can be described as a rejection of autonomous art and the idea of 'constructing' art. The movement favoured art as a practice mainly for social purposes.
What is the Bauhaus Art Movement?
Bauhaus is a German word meaning "house of building" and was a school founded in 1919 Weimar Germany. The school emerged out of late 19th century desires. This reunites applied arts and manufacturing and reforms education.
Grid System
Joseph Muller-Brockmann's work mainly focuses on using a grid system in order to master all aspects of design accurately and efficiently. Also enabling designers to gain knowledge of solutions through working practice.
“The grid system is an aid, not a guarantee. It permits a number of possible uses and each designer can look for a solution appropriate to his personal style. But one must learn how to use the grid; it is an art that requires practice.” - Josef Müller-Brockmann
